AUGUST 18, 2018

Open Studios | Maiden LA

“She Paints” is a trio of painters: Giovanna Pizzoferrato, Jackie Farkas, & TK Kuk. These artists share a workspace in Downtown L.A. On August 18th,  they invite the public to their Open Studios reception as part of the Maiden LA programming. Each artist works in a distinct way through the medium of painting.

Giovanna Pizzoferrato’s paintings and drawings investigate touch and connections. She studies physical objects in search of some understanding of attachments, both mechanical and sentimental.

Jackie works in a raw, gestural mode of abstract painting, and works with manipulated images that resemble colorful, psychedelic paintings. She indulges in electric hues and interconnected forms. Through painting and photography, she investigates the mysterious world of abstraction, while evaluating the challenges of presentation and display.

As a first-generation Korean American, TK Kuk seeks to restore cultural gender imbalances through portraiture.  Her subjects are defined in a new set of terms that were once only reserved for and by the patriarchy.

The selected artworks for New Quarters range from installations to 2-D artworks that interpret the hybrid site of Hayes Valley Art Works. Functioning simultaneously as developed and feral, HVAW provides a multifarious encounter with the land, art, people, and the built environment. In the gallery on site, the 2-D artworks of New Quarters range from still and serene abstract paintings to complex collage that utilize color and form in similar qualities as their surroundings. The surroundings involve telephone poles, concrete slabs, fencing, overgrown milk thistle, freshly planted gardens, and modest grade of dirt terrain.

The combination of these elements located in the site recall a history of a developed property that once functioned as a freeway on-ramp and homeless encampment, but other elements of the property reveal an attempt by nature to recapture what the lot once was prior to its development. The subtle gradations of color and sharp geometric forms that encompass the works in the gallery reflect the brackish environment that one experiences upon entering HVAW, and question what this rare slice of open and underdeveloped space in San Francisco might provide for the arts community.

MAY 2, 2016

I participated in 2nd annual Parking Lot Art Fair, a pop up take over of the Fort Mason Center Parking lots. Artists reserved parking spaces beginning at 6 am for temporary art installations that dominated the lots for a day. Hundreds of artists participated, from the emerging to the established.

This year I collaborated with Malena-Lopez Maggi on a booth. Our station was situated across from Jenny Sharaf's shipping crate gallery, John Herschend representing "The Thing Quarterly" giving away a limited edition of 25 free pancakes, and Joey Enos' vibrant, helter skelter sculptures.

It was a fantastic event filled with the counter-cultural spirit of art!

My artwork from last year was featured in this year's Press Release, click for more information on the event.

AHA! Epiphanies in Art SHOW: An Immersive one-night-only art experience

March 19, 7:00PM - 11:00PM

The Lab, 2948 16th Street
The Mission, San Francisco
http://www.thelab.org

In the heart of the Mission District right next to the 16th St / Mission BART station.

This event was  an epic night of performance art, video art, sound art, live painting, music and photography in which we artists explore the notion of epiphany and creative expression.

We illuminated emerging local artists in a one-night-only art experience at the Lab, asking
artists from diverse backgrounds and practices to translate their idea of epiphany. This experiment explores this singular moment where ideas and experiences from the past and present collide in an unexpected manner, to create a new understanding or significance. This moment brings information from the unknown into the known, making the invisible visible.
